Smarter Travel Live 2016 Conference

City Car Club expansion integrated with West Yorkshire MCard

Teaming up with West Yorkshire Combined Authority, City Car Club is expanding from its base of 3,000 members across the region to offer 100 shared cars in every district; Bradford, Calderdale, Kirklees, Leeds, Wakefield and York. This is with support from the Department for Transport funded Developing Car Clubs England Programme. 20 of these vehicles will be hybrids and five will be electric – one in Bradford and two in both Leeds and York

West Yorkshire’s smart travel pass MCard holders will be offered first year membership for £1, saving £59 on standard membership. The card provides holders unlimited bus and rail travel in the region with an alternative to car ownership and the associated costs of insurance, maintenance etc.

Santander sponsor 500 shared bikes with nextbike in Milton Keynes

nextbike and Santander have announced a fully sponsor funded bike share scheme for Milton Keynes, marking Santander’s first partnership outside of London. The scheme will open with 500 bikes in partnership with Milton Keynes Council (MKC) and Milton Keynes City Centre Management. A 7-year deal has been agreed to deliver 60 docking stations connecting the city centre, business parks and residential neighbourhoods across the 170 mile ‘Redway’ cycle path network.

nextbike will be offering more details on the scheme at Smarter Travel LIVE, which takes place at ArenaMK, Milton Keynes, on 17-18 March 2016.


Test riding Exeter’s nextbike electric bikes in Stuttgart region

From April 24 electric bikes will be available to share in Exeter & Dawlish, supplied by nextbike and operated by Co Bikes – the sister organisation of Co-Cars who operate 19 cars in the South West region. nextbike organised a test ride of the same bike technology in Stuttgart region between two railway station hubs with staff from Bikeplus and Bath North East Somerset Council staff.

The Co-Bikes will be delivered thanks to the Department for Transport funded Shared Electric Bike Programme and have an impressive range of 30-50 miles.


Ford expands GoDrive to East London hotel

After the launch of GoDrive car sharing last May, Ford is now working in partnership with Holiday Inn. The Limehouse branch has been added to their network of 21 hubs throughout London offering flexible one-way point-to-point journeys. This represents an increasing commercialisation of the sector with leading car manufacturers investing in the car club sector.

The zero emission Ford Focus Electric and 1.0 litre Fiesta EcoBoost can be booked on the GoDrive smart phone app for 17p a minute all-inclusive rate covering the Congestion Charge, fuel, insurance and parking. Drivers are given a 5-minute free ‘grace’ period to familiarise themselves with the vehicle.

E-car club Barnet launches to improve air quality

Barnet Council & E-Car Club have unveiled two shared electric Renault Zoes for residents thanks to the Mayor’s Air Quality Fund. The cars are available 24 hours a day at a rate of £5.50 an hour or £45 a day, this includes charging, insurance, congestion zone exemption and a Source charging card. Their range on a full charge varies from 70-90 miles depending on usage.

Bikeplus UK bike share map

Bikeplus has produced a map of all public access bike sharing schemes in the UK & Ireland displaying the operators and the quantity of bikes.

Four shared electric bike schemes are featured; Inverness, Bristol, Exeter and Oxford, the latter will offer a combination of conventional and electric bikes.

The map includes nextbike’s Milton Keynes scheme, this is set to launch in Spring 2016 with sponsorship from Santander.

Outspoken’s electric cargo bike official launch set for January

Three electric cargo bikes have been received by Cambridge based Outspoken Delivery, initial trials test deliveries of Christmas trees have proven successful. The bikes are being used for commercial deliveries and public hire during evenings with support from the Department for Transport funded Shared Electric Bike Programme.


Bath bike share has doubled in popularity to an average of 1,000 shares a month

nextbike has announced its operated scheme in Bath has seen the quantity of hires nearly double from 524 in June 2014 to just over 1,000 monthly in June 2015. The scheme has become independent of local authority funding support thanks to support from the University. The network of docking stations has expanded with new locations at Moorland Road, Newbridge Park & Ride and Bath Spa University.

UberPool join forces with Facebook

With 1.4 billion people using facebook every month, uber have teamed up in collaboration to offer a new platform for their users to contact drivers. Driver status updates and payments can be processed through a private message, this aims to simplify the process and remove the need to download an app.

This service is currently in testing and will be available to select users in the locations where Uber operates in the United States. More countries and other transportation partners will be available soon.

SwopCar employee car sharing arrives in the UK this year

LeasePlan, the Dutch fleet management operator will roll out an on-demand corporate car sharing in the UK during 2016, employees will be able to check availability, book and plan journeys cars via an online platform and mobile app. The service aims to reduce costs of running a fleet for businesses and providing fleet managers with data on vehicle usage and carbon emissions with the increased demand for corporate sustainability.

Audi's adventures in 'shared mobility'

Audi invest $28 million in Silvercar, its latest venture branded as a ‘shared transport’ initiative. Whilst following a marked trend of vehicle manufacturers’ increasing involvement in the sector, Silvercar appear to mainly offer a slightly more streamlined form of airport car hire. Currently the vehicles are available to share at the twelve busiest Ameircan car hire airports.

Meanwhile in a separate initiative, Audi has chosen Miami & San Francisco to pilot another car sharing scheme, offering residents shared Audi vehicles.

General Motors invest in Lyft

Leading auto mobile manufacturer General Motors (GM) is taking the 2+ car sharing sector in US seriously with $500 million investment in Lyft. GM’s announcement is a step towards a model of shared car use, with the launch of UberPool this is another sign of the growing confidence and commercialisation of shared mobility.

GM will now offer Lyft users the chance to share General Motors vehicles for their peer-to-peer lift sharing service at “rental hubs”.

Lyft will now be valued at $5.5 billion, compared to $60 billion-plus valuation of its rival Uber, however General Motors support is the first automotive manufacturer to directly fund an operator. Both GM and Uber have expressed a desire to invest in autonomous vehicles.

Cycle City will be hosted by Leicester

The city recently featured in the Guardian as the ‘the UK’s unlikely new poster city for cycling’ is the location for 2016’s Cycle City Active City conference, Landor & The Association of Bike-ability Schemes are hosts. The programme will focus on active travel benefits for businesses, cities and health, Bikeability training and cycle logistics. Bikeplus will be hosting a session on the latest developments in bike share.

GreenFleet Scotland

GreenFleet Scotland is a national event showcasing ultra-low emission, plug-in, hybrid and electric vehicles to organisations that want to improve the efficiency of their transport operations and to address poor air quality caused by emissions from road transport. It takes place at the Royal Highland Centre, Edinburgh on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th April.

Carplus’s stall will have representatives from City Car Club, Co-wheels and E-Car Club and we will be highlighting to businesses the benefits of using the environmentally friendly vehicles of their local car club to replace expensive grey fleet mileage
